Individual Grants


KMP invites Kenyan journalists to submit proposals for investigative and public interest stories. Proposals should reflect the applicant’s commitment to fairness and impartiality and should demonstrate the applicant’s interest in giving a voice to all sides of a story. KMP actively seeks proposals from rural based and female journalists. Applicants should have at least two years of relevant work experience.


KMP will award grants to proposals that focus on investigative and public interest journalism.

KMP will assess proposal on the:

  • Significance and uniqueness of story subject/idea
  • Quality of preliminary research/background information on the story idea/subject
  • At least two years experience in journalism
  • Proof of consistent publishing at least over the last two years
  • Guarantee of story publication/broadcast
  • Type of media outlet (public and private broadcaster, community or vernacular media, digital publications, magazines, newspapers)
  • Location of the journalist (Rural/Urban based)
  • Projected duration of the story production process
  • Projected budget

Successful proposals will need to contribute to at least one of the following priority areas: politics, service delivery, implementation of the constitution, impunity, accountability and elections.


The full application should be submitted together with:

  • A two-paged resume
  • Two samples of previously published work
  • Two references
  • Signed guarantee by your editor that the story will be published or broadcast.
